Peer Counselor Program

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are like you! They are here to help support you and your baby as you learn to breast or chestfeed together.

Your Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will:

  • support and encourage you throughout your breastfeeding journey
  • regularly follow up to see how breastfeeding is going
  • answer all your questions and concerns
  • share new information based on current evidence
  • help you understand your baby’s sleep, behavior, and crying
  • provide Tele-health visits by video to show infant feeding tips
  • connect moms together through virtual breastfeeding support groups
  • complete low-risk breastfeeding consults
  • refer you to a lactation consultant if you need extra help

Who can enroll in the peer counseling program?

  • Prenatal participants who are at least 16 weeks into their pregnancy

What our moms are saying about the Peer Counselor Program

“I would love to continue receiving peer counseling longer than 6 months. My counselor supported me and believed in me. It was nice to have that support.”

Muriel

“She is everything that I did not expect. She is a great person and I am very grateful to her for accompanying me in these six months. I had never met such a kind person”

Erika

What our Peer Counselors are saying about the program

“A peer counselor to me means that I am able to be that cheerleader that mommy needs when she isn’t sure if she is doing the right thing or not. I’m here to guide her and not judge her and be able to help her make more informed decisions. When she feels she is not being heard I am here to provide and ear and listen to her on her time of need.  It sometimes feels like motherhood is something you do alone and you learn things as you go, but I’m here to accompany the mom in her journey and make sure she has someone to lean on in her time of need.”

Crystal, Santa Ana West WIC

“Being a peer counselor is not just providing info to a breastfeeding mom, but it is empowering a family to make healthy choices with their family and I love that I get to be part of the empowerment. This person (mom) is advocating for herself and being the voice for her baby needs and for her family.”

Rhonda, Slauson WIC
