The Public Health Foundation Enterprises WIC Program (PHFE-WIC)
is a nonprofit agency that has been providing WIC services in the Los Angeles
and Orange Counties for over 25 years. Fifty WIC Centers are strategically
located in high-density areas of need throughout the two counties serving
approximately 316,000 clients every month.
- PHFE-WIC is the largest local WIC agency in the country, serving approximately
4% of the nation’s total and 25% of California’s total WIC participants.
Eighty-one percent of the clients served by PHFE-WIC are Latino, 9% are African-American,
5% are Caucasian, 4% are Asian and <1% are Native American. WIC provides
services and written information in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese,
Cantonese, Armenian and Korean.
- PHFE-WIC is operated by a team of health professionals who, over
the past 25 years have transformed the clinics from two mobile teams who
served 2,500 participants into 50 store-front WIC Centers, each serving from
3,000 to 10,000 participants monthly. Thirty senior staff members, all Registered
Dietitians and most with Master’s Degrees in Public Health manage
all aspects of the program. Over 120 Nutritionists and 400 paraprofessional
Nutrition Program Assistants provide services to eligible families.
In the last three years, PHFE-WIC has successfully implemented a number of
publicly and privately funded enhancements to core WIC services including:
- increasing health care access for WIC families;
- parenting education and support groups ;
- alcohol prevention during pregnancy;
- early literacy interventions;
- neighborhood improvement projects such as a community gardens;
- advocating for immigrant WIC families who are reluctant to access
services.
