The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program
for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
serves over 69% of all infants born in
Los Angeles County (LAC). According to
Federal guidelines, pregnant and postpartum
women (up to 12 months) and children under
age 5 are eligible
for WIC services if their family income
falls below 185%
of the Federal Poverty Level. In LAC,
7 local agency WIC programs provide services
to WIC participants. The following table
shows the number of individuals and families
served monthly in LAC WIC Centers:

Since 1996, California WIC has been
connected electronically by a Statewide
Data Collection system (ISIS), but WIC
data have only been available for analysis
at the State level or WIC agency level.
Thanks to a research partnership
funded by First
5 LA and the support of the California
State WIC Branch, WIC data
from all 7 local agency WIC programs in
LAC have been aggregated to allow for
examination of county-wide trends.
LAC
WIC data are now available on the Healthy
City website. WIC participant data
are available at different area geographies
(including SPA, city, ZIP code and census
tract) with a variety of mapping and chart
features. Visit www.healthycity.org
and check out the WIC dataset under the
"Data Category"!
*These numbers reflect the entire LAC
WIC population. Approximately 4% of the
LAC WIC population could not be geocoded
and were excluded from the WIC dataset
on www.healthycity.org.
A survey of 5015 WIC families was recently
completed in order to examine additional
data about the low-income 0-5 population
in LAC. Click on the link below for a copy
of the first report. Check back regularly
for new reports. Click
here to view a copy of the survey instrument.
Report #1 Overview of the Survey |
First
5 LA provided the funding to allow
partnerships between the California State
WIC Branch and the following local agency
WIC Programs in LAC:
Antelope
Valley Hospital
City of
Long Beach
LA Biomed
Northeast
Valley Health Corporation
Pasadena
Public Health Department
PHFE
Watts
Healthcare Corporation
All of the above agencies
agreed to give the lead agency, PHFE-WIC,
access to information on their participants.
To ensure confidentiality for LAC WIC
participants, the California State WIC
Branch was able to aggregate these data
from the 7 agencies and provide the dataset
to PHFE-WIC for analysis.
